Expert Interview - Cane Sugar-Free Living

Sugar is in everything. I am sure you know that things like cupcakes and candy are loaded with sugar, but you may be surprised about the sugar content hiding in some foods that may seem otherwise innocent. Would you have thought that your baked beans, spaghetti sauce, ketchup and low-fat yogurt can actually be packed with more sugar than your dessert?

Today, I am interviewing Jacqueline Bourne, who has taken the plunge into sugar free living. You may remember her from a previous interview interview where we talked about getting your best internal and external glow. Her website is full of helpful resources, so make sure to check it out.

In this interview, you'll learn more about how Jacqueline was able to transition her family away from sugars and the incredible transformation this has had on their health and lives. She even gives recommendations for sugar substitutions as well as a delicious recipe!

Hi Jacqueline! Thank you for taking the time to speak with us about "life without cane sugar"! We already know a little about your back story from the first interview. Can you let us know a little more about your personal journey with life without cane sugar?

Hello, thank you for featuring me! Yes, I'd love too!

Everyone knows that too much sugar isn’t good for you. In fact when was the last time you read an article on the benefits of cane sugar (there isn't one). But what about no cane sugar at all? When my Dad was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, he decided to go the all natural route for his healing. With that, one of his protocols was too completely avoid cane sugar. Honestly, when he told me that, I thought that would be the worst thing to have to give up. However, since I always love a challenge, and knew this would require one heck of a disciplined mind set, I decided we would support him by taking cane sugar out of our diets one day a week. Then, 1 day became 2, 2 became 3, and 3 days became a week. Then came a month, pushing through to a year, and now it's a lifestyle. I am happy to say that my Dad is cancer free!

Wow, that is an incredible journey! I am so glad your dad is cancer free now! So going back to "raising a family without cane sugar" - tell us what that even means. 

Not eating sugar means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. For me, raising my family without refined cane sugar means we don’t eat any cane sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar, molasses, concentrates, high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, etc. Now, I will say that antibiotics and medications contain cane sugar and most homeopathic remedies contain .036 thousandths of a gram of sucrose in one daily dose. This would be my only exception to the use of cane sugar. Hopefully, one day there will be naturally sweetened alternatives.


And how is cane sugar different than other types of sugars?

Cane sugar is in everything. It’s in salad dressings, spices, soups, nut butters, jelly, condiments, milk, sports drinks, supplements, vitamins, processed foods, meats, and so on.  Cane sugar goes through a heavy processing where all the vital minerals, nutrients, protein, lipids, antioxidants, and fiber are stripped entirely from the plant. Resulting in isolated, crystallized, pure poison leftovers. It’s a highly addictive substance that stimulates the over production of serotonin, the "feel good chemical", in the brain. This is why when the effects start to diminish, we crash, and reach for more sugar.  This is because we need that rush of feel good chemicals again. 

According to William Dufty, in his book Sugar Blues, "of all foods processed by man, refined carbohydrates like sugar and white flour are altered the most: 90% of the cane or beet is removed, 30% of the wheat. Man refined sugar is 8 times as concentrated as flour and 8 times as unnatural. It is the unnaturalness that deceives the tongue and appetite leading to over consumption. Who would eat 2.5 lbs of sugar beets per day? Yet the equivalent in refined sugar is a mere 5 oz."

Overconsumption of sugar leads to diabetes, obesity, coronary thrombosis, and is linked to cancer, stroke, depression, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, rapid aging, lethargy, lack of motivation, and much more. Removal of the natural vegetable fiber produces tooth decay, diseases of the gums, stomach trouble, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, and diverticular disease.

Cane sugar is so addictive that it has been compared to heroin. This is why it's so dangerous! Just think, children are the biggest targets of this pretty, bright, wrapped, sweet poison!

Yikes! I can see why it is good to stay away from cane sugar! What are some good alternatives that you use instead of cane sugar? 

+ Local Raw Organic Honey - Eating locally harvested honey helps reduce allergies you may experience throughout the year in your specific region. It is a phytonutrient powerhouse loaded with incredible antioxidants. It is also antibacterial, and has anti-inflammatory affects. When managing my father-in-law's Type-2 diabetes, we noticed a significant drop in his blood sugar when replacing cane sugar with raw honey. In some countries they use Manuka honey to treat burns, wounds, and other skin conditions such as MRSA.

+ Pure Organic Maple Syrup - This is one of my favorite alternatives to cane sugar. I use maple syrup in almost all my sweet recipes. When I was managing my father-in-law's Type-2 diabetes, I noticed a significant drop in his blood sugar when he substituted maple syrup for cane sugar. His blood sugar levels went from a dangerous high of 435 to a low of 140 to be exact. Pure maple syrup contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, fights inflammatory disease, promotes skin health, and so much more.

+ Coconut sugar - This is also a great alternative to cane sugar. It is an anti-inflammatory, and it contains trace amounts of vitamin C, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, and copper. This was huge when helping my father-in-law manage his diabetes. He was able to consume coconut sugar in moderation without raising his blood sugar. This was unlike the dangerous high blood sugar readings that he got when he consumed cane sugar.

Remember, just because sugar is natural doesn't mean you can eat as much as you want. Be mindful and still eat in moderation.

Thank you so much for that amazing list! So I am curious, what are some benefits or changes we can expect to see after removing cane sugar from our diet?

The first thing I noticed was how clear and youthful my skin started looking. I began to have more energy, started losing weight and fitting into my clothes more comfortably. I was thinking more clearly, almost like a foggy veil was lifted off my head.

The most tremendous changes came from my 4 boys, both behaviorally and physically. At the time, I just thought it was normal for them to behave the way they did, and have the health problems that they had. Keep in mind, by taking refined sugars out, we also stopped eating all the troublemakers that go along with it. These are things like gluten, artificial flavors, harmful additives, food coloring, and all those toxic, hard to pronounce ingredients.

Let’s start with Jriver, my youngest. After just 1 week of no refined sugars he stopped wetting the bed. I was shocked! Having accidents was a nightly occurrence. Yay for no more 2 a.m. sheet changes!

Next up Jacxs. Jacxs’s attention span was all over the place. He never listened, was always argumentative, and could never focus or sit still. Thank goodness we homeschool or he probably would have needed to be medicated. About a month into our detox, I couldn’t believe how well he began to focus and listen. His mannerisms completely changed over the course of just one month. He is a completely different child!

On to Jonas, the younger twin. Jonas was always having chest pains, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, and needed an inhaler hand. He had dark under-eye circles, and lots of asthma attacks. I just figured it was allergies. Over the course of 6 months, I slowly noticed over time that he wasn’t having any of these symptoms anymore. I am happy to report he no longer needs an inhaler.

Last but not least, Joel, the older twin, would have the worst bloody noses I have ever seen. I’m not kidding when I say a box of tissue was required to stop them. After the bleeding would stop, the headaches would begin. This was a weekly to bi-weekly occurrence that stopped about 3 months into our cleanse.

I also noticed they all play so well together now, less fighting and arguing. They used to get rashes and random breakouts, but now their skin is so clear, soft, and flawless.

Maybe refining your diet from toxic cane sugar and other harmful ingredients is just the answer you’re looking for. Maybe it’s the key to your healing! Maybe it’ll help you like it helped us. The greatest, most unexpected gift was the amount of passion and driving force this instilled in me to encourage others to live a healthier life, and so OK B Healthy was born from a simple (not easy) lifestyle change.

Wow, the changes you have seen in yourself and your kids are absolutely incredible! I have to ask, can you tell about kicking soda and other cane sugar filled drinks?

The best way to kick soda and other cane sugar drinks to the curb is to remind yourself of the dangers and diseases you are putting yourself at risk for. I highly recommend educating yourself on the harmful effects of cane sugar by watching documentaries and reading books that support your efforts. Sugar Blues by William Dufty, Pure, White, and Deadly by John Yudkin, and Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, are a few of my favorites.

What helped me physically was to juice organic fruits and vegetables and drink those when I was having a craving for something other than water to drink. You can also try fruit infused water, or brewing your own iced tea (use organic tea) and adding maple syrup to sweeten with a little lemon and ice. Of course, the very best replacement is drinking filtered water. After all, our bodies are over 70% water!

Do you have a favorite cane sugar free recipe that you can share with us?

Naturally, I love sweets! I have a lot of sweet recipes on my website. Here is a family favorite you may enjoy requiring only 3 ingredients: Maple Press Cookies.

Wow, thanks for sharing that recipe with us today! I can't wait to make them soon! I am sure a lot of readers are wondering: Are there any tough withdrawal symptoms people should expect after removing cane sugar from their diets? And what can they do to work through this?

Well, everybody's withdrawal symptoms are different. For me it felt like I got hit by a truck! I had night sweats, headaches, muscle pain, neck pain, irritability, depression, mood swings, and flu-like symptoms. Basically I felt like a drug addict going through withdrawals. Why? Because cane sugar is a drug and your body isn't getting its normal "hit"... so yes, you may experience withdrawals.

What got me through it? At the time I didn't have any of my recipes so I would just eat spoonfuls of honey whenever I felt like a craving coming on. Drinking lots of water, and eating lots of fruit helped tremendously. (Lucky for you I have lots of recipes to help you through on my website). Once you make it to the other side, it's well worth every bit of temporary detox discomfort.

Everyone's bodies are a little different, especially if they have Autoimmune Disease(s). But in general, with everything we've discussed today, would you say that most people can try these tips and tricks?

Yes! Like I stated before there is no evidence of cane sugar being beneficial to the human body or animals. It's actually shown to have harmful effects. So, taking cane sugar out of your diet will completely alter your mind, body, and life for the better! You may just become the person you've always wanted to be! Taking cane sugar out of your diet entirely will encourage healing in the most beneficial way for every body.

Any final tips and tricks you'd like to share with us for making easy, healthy changes to our diets?

Be wise to cane sugars, friends. Cane sugar doesn't hang out with a good crowd. Its destructive companions include: hydrogenated oils, gluten, preservatives, emulsifiers, anti-caking agents, stabilizers, thickening agents, natural flavors, artificial flavors, toxic food dyes, chemicals, preservatives, the list goes on! So, when you say goodbye to cane sugar you will also be saying goodbye to its toxic friends!

Your body needs the best influences. Your body craves the companionship of true foods, with real ingredients. When my friends ask me if a certain food product is good I ask them to ask themselves, "Is this the way God intended this food to be?". So, ask yourself the same question. Is the food I'm about to buy or eat the way God intended it to be, or did man manipulate it? Are the ingredients listed on the package real or fake? It's simple, manipulated foods by man cause disease, and God's food heals.

That is some amazing advice! One last thing... you've had some big updates since we last talked! Can you share with us what you're working on?

Yes! Big news to share! OK B Healthy will be going storefront this Fall 2020. It will be family owned and operated. Basically everything I love in a store without compromising anyone's health. A little store with BIG heart! To think it all came about because we took cane sugar out of our diets!
